Russian pianist Yury Martynov's performances and vast discography on modern and historical pianos have seized the admiration and affections of music lovers worldwide. For the second half of his 2018 Music Matters début, he played Franz Liszt's painterly, ferociously challenging Third Year of Pilgrimage.
His partner on this heady, poetic journey was our 1886 Chickering concert grand. Calling on the piano's subtle tonal shading, now and again on its sheer horsepower, Martynov conjured forth Liszt's unrivaled pianstic sorcery. Pianist and piano fused in an evocation of fine chiaroscuro, brilliant polychrome, and spellbinding Northern Italian soundscapes. Though we were unable to video the recital, a succession of appealing images lends visual dimension to the vibrant live recording.
This is our fourteenth Covidtide webcast on La Grua's YouTube channel. As the threat of our pandemic begins to diminish, and as performances with a live audience again become possible, we will continue to produce occasional concert videos.
