Portuguese Fado to warm the soul
Fado is the folk music of the old Portuguese cities. Until recently, it was an entirely oral tradition. Its fluid, intimate nature brings about subtle, ever-evolving variation that keeps the tradition vibrantly alive.
What's fado about? These wistful, haunting songs — it is largely a sung tradition – evoke longing and tragic loss, or joy tempered by what fate holds in store. The busy ports where the sea and Portugal meet infused fado with a rhythmic and harmonic complexity that make it unique in Europe. There's just nothing like it. Sonia Bettencourt and her brilliant fado colleagues are masters of their art. Won't you join us for a moving, memorable afternoon?
Sponsored by the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society.
After the concert’s wine reception at La Grua, enjoy special price acepipes (Portuguese tapas) at the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society located around the corner at 26 Main St. (Sausage, fish tacos, kale soup & more!)
"guitarra portuguesa" is the name by which people know the instrument; "Portuguese guitar" is acceptable but lacks the poetry of the original
