Pianist Gail Olszewski will devote her first Music Matters recital to evoking the celebrated chiaroscuro play of light that is the pulsing heart of the Scandinavian Romantic. Contrasting the pale, transparent light of Europe's northern lands with its at times terrifying darkness, she will bring us a visceral reminder of the sorcery Grieg, Sibelius, and Melartin wove with their nationally inspired scores. The richly contrasting Scandinavian soundscape whisks us between serene, still woods and the craggy pathos of tragic myth and unfulfilled love. Strong stuff! Do join us.

CYCLES! is Music Matters' presentation of integral performances of groups of compositions by, typically, a single composer. Following our first traversal, Grieg's sixty-six Lyric Pieces (on modern piano), we will survey the Nineteen Great Keyboard Suites of Bach (on piano, harpsichord, and Bach-era Baroque piano).
