The Stonington Singers is an auditioned group consisting of students from grades 5-8 at Mystic Middle School. They are conducted by Ellen Effman-Gilbert, whose colleagues awarded her the 2017 American Choral Directors Association Director of the year for the state of Connecticut. This choir consistently scores at the Platinum level at Adjudication festivals throughout New England. Most recently they had the distinction of begin awarded first place out of 38 competing choral ensembles at Fantastic Festival. Members from this choir attended the ACDA Eastern Division Honors Choir, the Eastern Region Music festivals by audition, CT ACDA Honors choir and served at the Middle School Honors Choir at CMEA Conferences by invitation.
This group has commissioned and premiered works by Amy F. Bernon and presented the World Premier of NYC composer Jim Papoulis’ piece Yo Puedo at the 2015 CMEA Conference. They were also chosen to sing as the backup chorus for the 40th anniversary tour of FOREIGNER at Foxwoods in 2016. They collaborate with Eastern CT Chorus and Symphony in the CT premiere of Paul McCartney’s Ecce Cor Meum. Their most recent project included a collaboration with Jeff Kleitz and members of the Yale Music Department whose piece Kyrie Eleison is being premiered by the group this evening. Last year, they released a CD and recorded the tracks at the LaGrua Center-their favorite place to sing!
