The members of the New York-based Hermitage Piano Trio bring us a compelling look at compactly scaled early-modern works for their instrumental combination. Famously difficult to write for and to bring off in performance, the piano trio approaches symphonic writing in scale, has moments of great intimacy, and rewards its listeners in ways no other chamber combination comes close to. As the warmth and round phrases of the Romantic era melted into the vigorous angularity and sharply defined harmonic fabrics of early-20th-century compositions, the transparency and flexibility of the piano trio made it the format of choice for new chamber pieces. Join us to hear the persuasive, deeply satisfying Hermitage Piano Trio play three of these striking works.

This concert is generously sponsored by Christine McMasters and Peter Reinhardt.

This chamber afternoon will last about 70′ and runs without an intermission.
