La Grua Center currently owns a 1930 Mason & Hamlin concert grand piano, and hosts an 1886 Chickering concert grand.
1930 Mason & Hamlin
La Grua Center’s 1930 Mason & Hamlin Model AA parlor grand is one of the last pianos made to this respected firm’s celebrated designs and high standards of craftsmanship. The installation of new hammers in 2021, exact replicas of the originals, returned this modest yet impressive concert instrument to its condition when new. Its rich, feisty musical persona is a perfect foil to that of the big Chickering concert grand, a 19th-century sibling.
1886 Chickering
Fans of our Music Matters series will be familiar with the 1886 Chickering, the first overstrung concert grand by Boston firm Jonas Chickering & Sons. The instrument’s rich sound makes it an appealing choice for many of our performers. We thank Artistic Advisor Christopher Greenleaf, for allowing us to host this remarkable time capsule, which has expanded our musical offerings. Check out a concert that includes the Chickering, before it moves on to a permanent home.

Margaret Bonds Three Dream Portraits (1959)
“My throat is deep with song“, begins one of Margaret Bonds’ evocative songs. This phrase perfectly captures the vivid presence of insightful, honey-voiced bass-baritone Dashon Burton. In this, his long-anticipated Stonington début, he joins beloved Music Matters pianist Stephen Porter and the noble 1886 Chickering in a rare, special program. These glowing song cycles by three profound 19th-c. masters and a lyrical mid-20th-c. composer travel the full emotional range. Immortal Dreams will run without an intermission and will last about an hour.
Tickets $25. Click here to purchase. At the door ticket sales $30.
