Mozart’s d-minor quartet, K.421, one of six he dedicated to Haydn, brims with operatic narrative and personalities. In contrast, Russian-Viennese Count Rasumovsky’s patronage of Beethoven allowed the composer to propel classical form in new, unexpected directions. In his inspired quest for new cross-cultural possibilities, Beethoven centered the work around Russian church modes and a hymn.
